Rehabilitation Stories

Fox Snake

This young fox snake was found caught in netting at Willowbrook Wildlife Center. (Yep, right here on our own property!) This plastic netting is often used in conjunction with straw and grass seed to help establish newly planted grass seed. The straw biodegrades, but the netting does not.

Dr. Sheila, one of Willowbrook’s volunteer veterinarian’s, successfully cut the netting off of the snake. After an examination, it was determined that the snake did not suffer any major injuries and was able to be released back into the wild.

Throughout the year, Willowbrook receives several animals from throughout DuPage County, including Cooper’s hawks and various species of snakes that have been caught in this type of netting. Staff plans on working with landscape professions to encourage the use of biodegradable netting in future projects to decrease the amount of animals becoming entangled.
