Pied-billed Grebe

The pied-billed grebe is a small diving bird that is found on lakes and ponds. It is rarely seen in flight, as it prefers to dive out of sight when threatened or scared. It is also rarely seen during migratory flights because the grebe typically migrates overnight. Although often compared to a duck, since they are both water birds, the grebe does not have webbed feet like a duck. Instead of webbing connecting all the toes, each toe has lobes that extend out on the sides. These lobes provide extra surface area for paddling.
