Rehabilitation Stories

Gull with Fishing Injuries

This adult ring-billed gull was admitted to Willowbrook on June 16th after being found near County Farm Road in Hinsdale thrashing about near a pond. The bird not only had a large fishhook stuck in its mouth, but also a huge fishing lure stuck in his wing! The bird was sedated and Dr. Karen Higgs worked patiently to remove the trash from the bird’s body. The bird suffered trauma to its wing and mouth from struggling to free itself from the hooks. Dr. Higgs prescribed antibiotics and lots of cage rest for the first 10 days of its stay at the center. The bird was then moved outdoors to exercise its healed wing and was later released at McKee Marsh!
