Ducks and Momma
This female mallard and her 6 newly hatched ducklings were hit by a car while trying to walk to a local pond. A passerby saw her get hit and collected up all of her babies that were running around the street. He then picked up the adult duck, thinking she was dead. It was at that time he realized that Momma duck was still alive! Within a couple of hours of her arrival at the Center, she was up and walking around, apparently only stunned from her ordeal.
Animal care staff took the opportunity of a mother duck and her young arriving at Willowbrook to foster to her some ducklings that had lost their mom. 6 more baby ducks were added to her family of 6! The ducklings were all the same size so it was difficult to tell the babies apart. She accepted the new additions with “open wings.”
2 days later, Momma duck and all 12 babies were released into a local forest preserve.
